She was spotted with a sonogram, refused to drink champagne, and just canceled a major world tour. What does it all mean? Sources tell Star the singer is having a baby! Mariah Carey is singing a different tune about motherhood these days. In the past, she's said she never wanted kids, but hubby Nick Cannon has apparently changed her mind! Friends tell Star that the couple--married April 30--are overjoyed to be expecting their first child in late spring! "Mariah tried to keep it a secret, but she's bursting with joy and just can't keep it to herself," one insider tells Star. "She's having a baby and couldn't be happier!" How did she find out the good news? "Mariah took a home pregnancy test after she missed her period," says another source. "She was crying tears of joy when she got the result and ran in the other room and told Nick immediately. They weren't really trying to get pregnant. It was more like, if it happens, it happens." And it did! But Mariah's telling close pals that because she's not that far along into the pregnancy, she's waiting until early 2009 before making any announcements, says the insider. "She wants to make sure that everything is going well and the baby is healthy before letting the world know."

But Mariah's secret is already slipping out! When Ellen DeGeneres tried to pry the truth out of Mariah on her talk show by offering her a glass of champagne, the mother-to-be smiled and refused it before finally pretending to take a sip. Then, in early December, the 38-year-old was reportedly spotted coming out of an ob-gyn's office in L.A., carrying what looked like a sonogram. Just days later, she stopped planning an upcoming world tour. Nick, 28, is especially thrilled at the prospect of becoming a dad, the insider says. "He's completely matured since he and Mariah got married. Nick was surprised when she told him that she was pregnant, but he's been celebrating ever since!" And Mariah is gearing up to be the perfect mom. "A boy or a girl--it doesn't matter to her," a friend tell Star. adding that the singer is close to sister Alison's children, and she's been very involved with the youth at the Fresh Air Fund's Camp Mariah. "People think she's a selfish diva, but if you ever saw her with those kids, your impression would change radically," says the pal. "She's going to be an amazing mom!"

Is Mariah Carey expecting something? Yes! Grammy nominations. But what about a baby? It seems not, at least for the moment. It doesn't mean that she hasn't been trying. Since she married much younger actor Nick Cannon last spring, the speculation is that Mariah would soon be pregnant. Last week, talk show host Ellen DeGeneres kept prodding her about it in an interview. She even tried to get her to drink Champagne. When Mariah only sipped it, Ellen declared, "You're pregnant!" Well, there are plenty of other reasons not to drink on national television. But in this case, it wasn't pregnancy. A friend of Mariah's laughed when I asked if the singing siren was knitting baby booties. "She isn't," the friend replied, and added that there was no sign of the stork yet. What Mariah may be expecting this week are Grammy nominations for her "E=MC²" album. She's scheduled to be one of the hosts this Wednesday, December 3rd, on the Grammy's prime time show on CBS. She, Taylor Swift and LL Cool J will announce nominees in six of the top categories. Knowing the Grammys, they haven't asked Mariah to do it unless she's in good shape. "E=MC²" should pick up nods in Best R&B album, Best Pop album, and Best Female in both R&B and pop.

Mariah Carey will travel to the World Music Awards on a £10 000 ($17 000) private flight. The singer is appearing on UK TV talent show The X Factor in London on Saturday night, so organizers have chartered the special plane to get her to the 20th annual ceremony in Monaco which takes place on Sunday. Mariah will be joined by husband Nick Cannon on the journey which will see them lavishly treated. "It'll be like a second honeymoon on board the jet for them. There'll be no expense spared for Mariah - lilies, mini-burgers, sparkling water and bundles of her favourite Hello Kitty toys as a present," a source told Britain's Daily Mirror newspaper. "Staff won't disturb them until Mariah calls, to ensure the love birds have the utmost privacy on the cosy flight."

Mariah has received 16 World Music Awards throughout her career - more than any other artist. Her accolades include the Legend award and a special Millennium award for being the best-selling female recording artist of all time. On this week's X Factor, Mariah will be mentoring the pop wannabes who will all have to interpret one of her hits. The 38-year-old star will perform her latest single I Stay In Love, along with her classic hit Hero with the contestants. The X Factor finalists' charity version of the song is currently at number one in the UK singles chart.

International pop icon Mariah Carey hosted a special evening at The Bank Nightclub at Bellagio last night (10/4). The sexiest nightlife destination in all of Sin City, The Bank will also serve as backdrop for Carey's latest music video, "I Stay in Love" as her husband Nick Cannon directs the epic today. With a welcome worthy of a true diva, Mariah Carey arrived last night hand-in-hand with Nick Cannon to hundreds of screaming fans. As Carey made her way onto the red carpet, the screeching crowd reached a feverish pitch with fans jumping on slot machines to catch a better glimpse. After posing for the dozens of paparazzi shooters and a horde of onlookers, Carey headed into The Bank to host the evening, again hand-in-hand with her man. As Carey made her entrance into the posh club, the packed house erupted. Prior to The Bank, Mariah and hubby Nick enjoyed a sensational dinner at Yellowtail Sushi Restaurant & Bar. The couple was joined by six of their friends and were seated at a window-side table overlooking the iconic Bellagio fountains. While Carey, sipping Pinot Grigio, chose to dine only on miso soup (sans tofu) along with tuna sashimi, Cannon and friends experienced the innovative dishes by award winning executive chef Akira Back such as the Popping Spicy Crab Rolls (an imaginative twist on the traditional Japanese dish -- a dynamic layer of Pop Rocks candy is added to the roll to ignite your taste buds!) Back personally welcomed Carey to Yellowtail Sushi Restaurant & Bar and after briefly posing for a few photos, Carey recalled actually meeting Back before when he prepared her meal while he was executive chef at Nobu in Aspen, prior to his joining The Light Group to open Yellowtail Sushi Restaurant & Bar.

Mariah Carey is determined to shut up all you people who laughed at her in "Glitter." The Grammy winner put away her lip gloss to play the battered wife of a state trooper in "Tennessee," which won raves at the Tribeca Film Festival. Director Lee Daniels was so impressed with her grit that he's cast her in "Push," in which she plays a Harlem social worker ministering to an obese, HIV-positive woman impregnated twice by her father. But Mariah isn't getting mired in misery. As she gets ready to tour again, she's also developing a movie musical based on her colossal-selling Christmas album. It's about a town outside a city - perhaps not unlike Mariah's hometown of Huntington, L.I. - where a ruthless developer wants to turn it into one big mall. "Mariah doesn't want to let that happen," says her producing partner Benny Medina. "Her character uses song and love to keep the Christmas spirit alive." Mariah says the script, which "High School Musical" writer Peter Barsocchini is working on, is still in the early stages. But she tells us, "Since I recorded the Christmas album, I've always wanted to make a movie to go with it, something that people could watch and hear and enjoy every year. I'm into it. I'm all about the holiday season."

What would it sound like if 15 of the hottest female singers joined voices? The answer will be revealed September 2nd. That's when "Just Stand Up" hits airwaves and iTunes. The song features Mariah Carey, Beyonce, Mary J. Blige, Rihanna, Fergie, Sheryl Crow, Miley Cyrus, Melissa Etheridge, Ashanti, Natasha Bedingfield, Keyshia Cole, Ciara, Leona Lewis, LeAnn Rimes and Carrie Underwood. All 15 singers will share the stage to perform the song live on September 5th during the "Stand Up to Cancer" television special, set to air simultaneously on ABC, NBC and CBS. Other stars expected to turn out for the hour long fund and awareness-raising program include Jennifer Aniston, Lance Armstrong, Katie Couric, Sally Field, Salma Hayek, Meryl Streep, Forest Whitaker and Reese Witherspoon. Mariah Carey may now largely avoid the daring vocal acrobatics that marked the beginning of what would become one of the most successful music careers of the last two decades. Hitting the high notes, therefore, wasn't much of a concern Thursday night in Hollywood. Instead, the singer faced other challenges. Chief among them: Can one of the most recognizable divas in the world emerge from what looked to be a giant plastic mascara box -- one that's placed upon a stage in the middle of a shopping mall -- with grace? And do so while ABC's "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" is coming back from a commercial break? But Carey's every stride comes equipped with a happy elegance that would shame beauty pageants the world over. Indeed, while she was performing a free five-song mini-set at Hollywood & Highland's outdoor mall, which was taped for ABC's late-night show, Carey might as well have been on a moving parade float, as nary a verse or a chorus was sung without a wave, a nod or a wink to a fan. That's not to say Thursday evening went off without a hitch. It was a little more than an hour before the 8:30 p.m. show time, and a crisis was brewing. A podium for photographers had been placed stage left, but this would fail to capture Carey's good side. It must, those working the show bustled, be moved to frame Carey's right side at once.

By the time Kimmel introduced Carey, everything was in its right place, and the singer offered a swift medley of current single "I'll Be Lovin' U Long Time" and "E=MC2's" runaway hit "Touch My Body." A few minutes later, the singer even stopped to let the crowd photograph her. "Let me pose," she said, asking the audience to shoot her "at the angle I prefer." A crowd estimate wasn't available from on-site security, but earlier Kimmel's music booker, Scott Igoe, said about 1,000 people would be allowed on the ground floor and an additional 1,000-plus around the upper levels. Some, such as 21-year-old L.A.-resident Stephanie De La Cruz, had been there as early as 9 a.m., and she said she would have been there 24 hours before that had her mother let her. What they witnessed was a brief but professional showing and an unbilled appearance from Southern rapper Young Jeezy. He joined Carey on "Side Effects," his gruff intonations providing a surprisingly effective counterbalance to Carey's pleasantly light phrasing. Since her career rebirth with 2005's "The Emancipation of Mimi," Carey has abandoned the wild vocal wailing that gave rise to "American Idol" and has emerged a thinner-voiced, but far more efficient, singer. Check "I'm That Chick," where the lyrics are embarrassing drivel (Carey compares herself to ice cream), but she was able to somehow pull it off by letting her voice sway with the song's rhythmic R&B shuffle.

The concert was the latest from Kimmel's show to be performed out on the streets of Hollywood, which launched in 2003 with an appearance by Coldplay on Hollywood Boulevard. Although most Kimmel performances happen inside the studio across from the Hollywood & Highland complex, or on the outdoor stage behind the studio, that wasn't the original intention. "We had this grandiose idea when the show started that we'd be doing these concerts every Friday night on Hollywood Boulevard," Igoe said. "Then they saw the price tag. 'Oh, $250,000 every Friday night? Don't think so.' " Now, the happenings are largely contingent on sponsors or record labels chipping in to defray costs, and Carey's performance was part of a national summer concert series from electronics company Samsung. Although Kimmel didn't have to close Hollywood Boulevard to have Carey perform, Igoe put the production costs as "probably about $250,000," noting that Carey doesn't come cheap. "There was a financial contribution Samsung had to make on top of the production to get her out here," he said. To those who had spent their day getting sunburned waiting for Carey, it was money well spent. When a group of fans was asked why it was worth 12 hours of standing in the Los Angeles heat to see a five-song set, this reporter was booed by the crowd for suggesting such a negative question.

Mariah Carey's friends and colleagues weren't invited to her impromptu wedding to Nick Cannon, but they can still send a gift. According to an insider, "Mariah's assistant, Gina, sent out over 100 e-mails to her wealthy friends letting them know that she's registered at Bergdorf Goodman if they want to buy her a present. It's odd because she's not even having a big wedding party or anything. It was assumed they'd have a big celebration when they got back, but no. They just want the gifts." On the list are "fine china, very expensive silver stemware" and other items. Carey's rep declined to comment.

Impromptu Wedding At Mariah's New Home In The Bahamas...Mariah Carey and MTV Star Nick Cannon married this week in the Bahamas.

According to reports, the pair wed in a secret ceremony in front of family and friends at Carey's house in Eleuthera on Wednesday. 'Wild N Out' host Cannon, 11 years younger than 38 year old Mariah, had this week shelled out $2.5 million for the 17-carat ring spotted recently on Carey's left hand which had then fuelled speculation that the couple were engaged. The pair met when Cannon directed a video for her recent single, "Bye, Bye," and have been dating for several weeks. This is the second marriage for Mariah Carey. She split from record executive Tommy Mottola in 1998 after five years of marriage. Cannon, 27, was previously engaged to model Selita Ebanks, but this is his first marriage for the MTV Star. NOTE: This has NOT been confirmed by Mariah's management.

In this week's issue, TIME reveals its list of the 100 most influential people in the world. Mariah Carey, profiled by Stevie Wonder, is honored as one of the most influential Artists & Entertainers.

Wonder writes of Mariah:

Mariah Carey
By Stevie Wonder

I could never describe or measure the level of respect and love I have for Mariah Carey in just 300 words, but you know, I'll do my best. I've met only three people who had a truly wonderful voice and spirit to match: my first wife Syreeta, Minnie Riperton and Mariah. Obviously she is talented and has a great voice, but when a person has the opportunity to be heard and seen, at the end of the day she will also be felt. I think Mariah has enjoyed such success at 38 because she's a good person; her heart is good. I love her spirit. When I lost my mother, she was one of the first people to reach out to me. She was away, but she still found a way to call me up and say a prayer with me. It's easy to be friends when the lights are bright, but how is your love when there's none of that? I know how Mariah's is. She has the ability to be sexy, but not so much that you think it's getting too crazy. It's a sexy classiness. The whole thing with her song Touch My Body is that she keeps it acceptable and has fun with it. And Mariah didn't break all those sales records just because she's beautiful. She has perseverance and consistency. You need the two: the ability to keep going and the ability to keep doing the right thing. She once said that every time she makes a new record, she feels as if she's brand-new again, like a young person looking at a computer for the first time. By doing it and not thinking about it, she lets the magic come. When people talk about the great influential singers, they talk about Aretha, Whitney and Mariah. That's a testament to her talent. Her range is that amazing. I look forward to the time the two of us can do a song together. I'm rewriting a song for her. It's going to be a tribute to my mother. Legendary singer-songwriter Wonder's most recent album is A Time 2 Love.

• Mariah Carey crowns the Billboard 200 for a sixth time as "E=MC2" starts atop the tally with 463,000 -- her biggest opening week. It's also the highest sales week of the year, surpassing the 375,000 start of Jack Johnson's "Sleep Through the Static" in February. Finally, "E=MC2" marks the best opening week for any album since Mary J. Blige's "Growing Pains" started with 629,000.

• Carey is now tied with fellow divas Madonna and Janet Jackson for the second most No. 1 albums among female artists. Only queen bee Barbra Streisand, with eight, is ahead of the pack.

• "E=MC2" is the eighth debut at No. 1 in as many weeks on the fast-moving Billboard 200. It follows penthouse-bows from Jackson, Alan Jackson, Rick Ross, Danity Kane, Day26, George Strait and Leona Lewis.

• Carey's last album, "The Emancipation of Mimi," also landed at No. 1 in its premier week, moving 404,000. "Mimi" spent two weeks atop the chart, was the best-selling album in the United States in 2005 and has shifted 5.8 million units total... This is the first time Carey has scored back-to-back No. 1 albums since "Daydream" and "Butterfly" reached the top in 1995 and 1997.

• Collectively, Carey's albums have sold 50 million copies in the United States since Nielsen SoundScan began tracking sales data in 1991. She's the third-biggest-selling albums artist in the SoundScan era, trailing only Garth Brooks (67.8 million) and the Beatles (56.2 million).

Mariah Carey looks certain to debut at No. 1 on next week's Billboard 200 with "E=MC²," based on massive first-day sales from the nine chains that report to Nielsen SoundScan's Building Chart. Unweighted sales for the Island Def Jam album are at 154,000 units on the report released today (April 16th). That's more than five times the total garnered by the current chart-topper, Leona Lewis' "Spirit" (Syco/J). By comparison, Carrie Underwood's "Carnival Ride" (Arista Nashville) had first-day sales of 150,000 and wound up shifting 527,000 in its first week. Billboard estimates that the merchants who report to the Building Chart -- Trans World Entertainment, Starbucks, Best Buy, Circuit City, iTunes, Border's, Target, Anderson Merchandisers, and Handleman Co. -- represent 80% of the U.S. retail market. Carey's last release, 2005's "The Emancipation of Mimi," debuted at No. 1 on The Billboard 200 with first-week sales of 404,000 copies.

Mariah Carey
E=MC² (Island Def Jam)
By: Margeaux Watson.

Winning Formula. Mariah Carey's E=MC² adds up to an aural success, offering a smart mix of dance and drama. Daydream. Butterfly. Rainbow. Glitter. No, those aren't the names of Barbie's pet ponies, they're the titles of Mariah Carey's albums from 1995 to 2001. So when she called her 10th studio CD The Emancipation of Mimi three years ago, it was clear that she intended to drop the cutesy shtick, let down her weave, and start getting real. It was a clever move. Emancipation was the lucky strike that updated Carey's sound with bass-heavy flavor and reversed the downward spiral of her sales. Now, with E=MC²--another bold title--she's out to prove that her comeback was no fluke. Of course, it's doubtful that Carey is a secret admirer of Einstein's theory of relativity, but one thing's for sure: The golden-throated diva has discovered a formula that works. Not unlike Emancipation, E=MC² finds Carey stacking the deck with the hottest producers and guest artist in urban music (Jermaine Dupri, StarGate, T-Pain, Damian Marley, Young Jeezy).

The result is a largely enjoyable mix of flirtatious club jams, midtempo love songs, and emotional ballads anchored by hip-hop beats that handsomely showcase the singer's powerful vocal chops. Ever the party girl, Carey opens the album with the sleek and seductive "Migrate," where she imagines getting buzzed on pinot grigio during a night out with the ladies. Other dancefloor anthems include "I'll Be Lovin' U Long Time" and "O.O.C.," which, for all of their pop polish, never lose their soulful spirit. But it's not all about velvet ropes and playful come-ons; notably, Carey suffers from a major love hangover on "Side Effects," a synthy cautionary tale about an abusive relationship. "Wakin' up scared some nights still dreaming 'bout the violent times," she sings with outspoken intensity. And yet Carey remains a romantic at heart. With the ballads "Love Story" and "Last Kiss," she reunites with Dupri to recapture the passionate splendor of 2005's "We Belong Together." It's unfortunate, then, that E=MC² closes with its only missteps, the somber elegy "Bye Bye"--an odd choice for the follow-up single to the cheeky hit "Touch My Body"--and the preachy gospel hymn "I Wish You Well" (this CD's version of Emancipation's "Fly Like a Bird"). Still, for an artist whose career was all but dead four years ago, Carey is wise to play it safe by building on the finest elements of her last CD. Were it not for the final two tracks, she could've gotten away with calling this album Treasure.

Mariah Carey, who beat Elvis Presley with 18 No. 1 singles, has renewed her worldwide publishing deal with Universal Music Publishing Group. The company will continue to publish Carey's catalog and future works for the world. Announcement arrives just two weeks prior to the release of her album "E=MC2." Carey has co-written all of the songs on the new album. Album's first single, "Touch My Body," debuted at radio Feb. 12, but only became available as a digital download last week.

Press Release:
David Renzer, Chairman & CEO, Universal Music Publishing Group (UMPG) today announced the renewal of world-renowned, five time Grammy award winner, multi-platinum artist Mariah Carey, to an exclusive, worldwide publishing agreement. Through the long-term relationship between UMPG, the world's leading music publishing company, and Mariah Carey, one of the most popular global artists, the company will continue to publish Carey's extensive catalog and future works for the world. On the heels of renewing her deal with UMPG, Mariah Carey will release her new highly anticipated album E=MC². Mariah Carey is an award-winning superstar with cumulative total sales of her albums, singles and long-form videos in excess of 81-times platinum in the U.S. alone and 156 million worldwide, making her the top-selling female artist in history. With a record 17 No. 1 singles - more than any female artist of the past century - five GRAMMY Awards, BMI Songwriter of the Year and Song of the Year recipient, eight American Music Awards, Billboard magazine's "Artist of the Decade Award," and the World Music Award as World's "Best Selling Female Artist of the Millennium" - Mariah Carey's ongoing career remains an unparalleled success story in the history of contemporary popular music.

Upon making the announcement Renzer commented, "Mariah Carey is well known for her incredible voice, but we also celebrate her incredible strength as a songwriter and the fact that she has co-written most of her best known songs. We're honored that she has agreed to renew her working relationship with UMPG and we look forward to continuing to promote her amazing and wonderful body of work globally." Mariah Carey secured her place as the No. 1 most successful female artist of all time as "Don't Forget About Us" became her 17th song to top the Billboard Hot 100. This positions Mariah as the only artist in contention to surpass The Beatles (with 20 No. 1's) in the modern era. With 77 total weeks of No.1 hits since 1990, Mariah also ranks 2nd only to Elvis, with 80 weeks. Mariah releases her 11th studio album E=MC² on April 15th, following the first single "Touch My Body," which debuted worldwide February 12th and is currently No. 1 on the Digital Songs chart. This highly anticipated album boasts songs all co-written by Mariah along with a variety of hit producers including UMPG's Manuel Seal, Jermaine Dupri, and many others. E=MC² is the follow up to her 2005 classic The Emancipation of Mimi LP (Island/Def Jam) under the auspices of L.A Reid and the management of Benny Medina at Handprint Entertainment which has since passed 10x platinum, and won three GRAMMY awards.

Mariah Carey is on track to collect her 18th No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart next week. "Touch My Body," the first single from her upcoming album, dipped one place to No. 15 on the latest survey. But the fresh availability of a digital download should send the song hurtling to the top next week. That will push Carey to second place among artists with the most No. 1s in the rock era. The record is held by the Beatles with 20; Carey is currently tied with Elvis Presley. Carey's album, "E=MC2," the follow-up to her 2005 Grammy-winning smash "The Emancipation of Mimi," arrives April 15 via Island Def Jam. Asked recently by Billboard if she ever thinks about surpassing the Beatles' record, Carey admitted with a laugh, "I do, because people bring it up. But it's not like I sit around thinking about that type of stuff while I'm creating something. I did write this record in terms of wanting it to be a lot of songs that could potentially be singles, because people like that." "I think it would be phenomenal," Island Def Jam Music Group chairman Antonio "L.A." Reid says of the prospect. "But the real goal is to create music the whole world can sing. And if we break records and set some milestones while doing that, that would be beautiful." Note: The final Billboard position for "Touch My Body" will be published on Wednesday (April 2nd).

The scene Monday night inside Manhattan's Gotham Hall recalled a sweet 16 party. But the highlight of the party — at least for the "Hills" starlets — was the arrival of Mariah Carey, who performed a small set that included "I'm That Chick" and "Touch My Body," new songs from her forthcoming album, E=MC2, which is due April 15th. Wearing a black skirt with a gold top, Carey also performed "We Belong Together," which the audience sang back to her. She was whisked offstage after the performance to resounding cheers.
